Incident Details
A charter aircraft departed Stepanakert en route to Yerevan, carrying 30 refugees and three crew members. While at cruising altitude over the Kalbajar district in southern Armenia, the aircraft was attacked by the pilot of an Azerbaijani Sukhoi Su-25. The attack resulted in the failure of two engines and the spread of smoke throughout the cabin.
Emergency Landing
In response to the emergency, the crew initiated an immediate descent and diverted to Sisian Airport. The aircraft touched down on its belly, slid for several hundred meters, then veered off the runway and came to rest engulfed in flames.
Casualties and Damage
All 33 occupants evacuated safely. Both pilots sustained slight injuries. The aircraft was destroyed by the ensuing fire.
Probable Cause
The official investigation determined the probable cause to be an attack in flight by the pilot of an Azerbaijani Sukhoi Su-25.
