Accident Sequence
During the takeoff roll on runway 06, after passing decision speed, the crew began rotation, but the aircraft did not respond. The crew aborted the takeoff and initiated emergency braking. Unable to stop within the remaining runway distance, the aircraft overran the runway and rolled for about 420 meters. At a speed of 210 km/h, it struck a drainage ditch 6.7 meters deep and a 2-meter-high embankment before coming to rest, bursting into flames.
Injuries and Fatalities
107 occupants were killed and 19 people, including one crew member, were injured.
Probable Cause
Official findings determined that the crew did not prepare the flight according to published procedures and failed to follow the pre-takeoff checklist. Consequently, the aircraft was unable to take off because the elevator trim was set in a landing configuration.
