Loss of Separation Between Two Departing Aircraft at Riga International Airport (YL-BBT)

Incident Overview and Classification On November 23, 2017, a serious incident occurred in the Riga Flight Information Region (FIR) when two aircraft lost separation after departing from Riga International Airport (EVRA). The Transport Accident Investigation Bureau (TAIIB) classified the event as a serious incident and initiated an investigation under Annex 13 to the Chicago Convention and EU Regulation No 996/2010. The incident involved a Norwegian Air Shuttle Boeing 738, registration LNN-II, and an Air Baltic Bombardier DH8D, registration YL-BBT. Both aircraft were scheduled to fly to Stockholm/Arlanda (ESSA) and departed from runway 18. The occurrence was reported to the TAIIB on November 24, 2017, by the Safety Management Department of the Air Navigation Service Provider (ANSP), the State Joint Stock Company „Latvijas gaisa satiksme” (LGS).
