Air India reportedly weighs merger with Air India Express
The incoming chief of Air India is reportedly examining a combination of Air India and Air India Express in order to cut costs and remove duplicated structures, a move that would still need approval from the supervisory board.
The incoming head of Air India, Tewolde Gebremariam, is reportedly considering a merger of Air India and Air India Express, Bloomberg reported, citing people familiar with the talks.
The goal would be to cut costs and reduce overlapping structures. The two carriers currently hold separate operating licences and run their own management, technical and administrative operations.
Talks are said to be at an early stage and would need approval from the supervisory body. The Air India Express brand would be kept even if the airlines are combined.
Air India lost 2.3 billion US dollars, about 2.0 billion euros, in the financial year to the end of March.
