Air New Zealand posts wide pre-tax loss for 2026 financial year

Air New Zealand reported a pre-tax loss of NZ$336 million for the year ending June 2026, reversing a prior-year profit, as fuel costs and engine troubles weighed on results.

Air New Zealand posted a pre-tax loss of NZ$336 million, roughly €170 million, for its 2026 financial year, which ended in June. A year earlier the carrier had reported a pre-tax profit of NZ$164 million. The net loss after tax came to NZ$242 million, or about €122 million.

Revenue still grew, rising 3.9 percent to NZ$7.0 billion, according to the airline. That increase in sales was not enough to offset a sharp rise in costs.

The airline attributed the downturn mainly to higher jet fuel prices, ongoing engine problems affecting part of its fleet, and increased maintenance and infrastructure expenses. Air New Zealand said the engine issues alone cost the company around NZ$190 million over the year.

The airline declined to issue a profit forecast for the 2027 financial year, citing uncertainty over how fuel prices will move. No further detail was given on which aircraft or engine types were involved in the reported technical problems, nor on any timeline for resolving them.
