Airbus H160 Order for Japan's Fire and Disaster Management Agency

Japan's Fire and Disaster Management Agency has ordered one Airbus H160 helicopter, its first of the type. Airbus confirmed the agreement on September 3, 2026.

The helicopter will be based in Kumamoto prefecture on Kyushu and will join the FDMA's existing fleet for nationwide emergency response. Airbus said its primary role will be rapid aerial reconnaissance and real-time visual intelligence gathering during major natural disasters.

The H160 will carry Helisat advanced satellite technology. Airbus is also developing custom snow landing gear for operations in Japan's severe winter climates. Jean-Luc Alfonsi, managing director of Airbus Helicopters in Japan, said the integration would improve operational readiness and cut emergency reaction times.

Airbus says four H160s are now in service in Japan for law enforcement, electronic news gathering, and municipal firefighting. The company runs a dedicated H160 centre of excellence in Kobe to support the growing fleet.
