Airlines map new A321XLR routes for 2027 as fleet grows

Airlines are continuing to expand their use of the Airbus A321XLR, with several North American carriers announcing new routes for 2027. Airbus has delivered 47 of the aircraft since its launch in late 2024, and more than 400 remain on order.

United Airlines plans to launch five new routes from Newark and Washington Dulles: Newark-Luxembourg and Washington Dulles-Toulouse in April, Newark-Ibiza in May, and Newark-Valencia and Newark-Marseille in June. American Airlines will add JFK-Amsterdam and JFK-Nice in March and May, plus Philadelphia-Porto in March and Philadelphia-Vienna in May. Air Canada will start Toronto-Shannon and Toronto-Oslo in June, and add a fifth daily Toronto-London Heathrow flight in May.

The A321XLR's extra fuel capacity lets airlines connect smaller cities profitably without a widebody. American, Iberia, Aer Lingus, and Qantas already operate the type on routes such as New York JFK-Edinburgh, Madrid-Boston, and Dublin-Nashville, as well as US transcontinental and Australian domestic services.

United and American are also using the XLR to replace older Boeing 757s. Other operators include Saudia, IndiGo, and Wizz Air, though Wizz Air has scaled back its order and moved away from using the type specifically for longer routes. Airbus has not disclosed updated production rates amid delivery delays.
