Airlink Withdraws Third Rugby Flypast Amid SACAA Review of Cape Town Pass

Airlink has withdrawn its application to conduct a formation flypast over a Johannesburg rugby Test, the South African Civil Aviation Authority (SACAA) said. The airline had sought approval for three flypasts tied to a Test series between South Africa and New Zealand. The first was flown in Johannesburg on August 22, 2026. The second, over Cape Town's DHL Stadium on August 29, 2026, drew safety concerns after video footage circulated online.

SACAA said the applications were submitted under regulations for flights carrying no passengers or cargo and were approved under requirements for special air events. For the Cape Town flight, the operator provided the necessary documentation and completed a simulator practice and safety briefing beforehand. After media coverage of the pass, the regulator began compliance verifications, engaged Airlink, and obtained flight data recorder downloads and other material.

SACAA is analyzing the data and has asked for further information. A full report with recommendations will be shared with the airline once the assessment is complete. On September 1, 2026, Airlink notified the regulator it was pulling its application for a third flypast planned for the September 5 Test at FNB Stadium in Johannesburg.
