ICAO warns of growing risks to civil aircraft in conflict zones
ICAO has urged its 193 member states to strengthen protection of civil aircraft operating in or near conflict zones, citing long-range weapons, drones, GNSS interference, and modern air defenses as increasing threats.
The International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) has called on its 193 member states to step up measures to protect civil aircraft in and near conflict zones. The organization identified long-range weapon systems, drones, disruption of satellite navigation systems, and modern air defense as growing threats.
States should assess risks in their airspace, share threat information more quickly, and improve cooperation between military and civil authorities. This is intended in particular to prevent commercial aircraft from being mistakenly identified as military targets. Airlines must also carry out corresponding risk analyses.
ICAO is currently revising two manuals on dealing with military activities and flights over or near conflict areas.
