American Airlines 737 returns to Charlotte after left engine power loss
An American Airlines flight bound for New York turned back to Charlotte shortly after takeoff when its left engine failed to produce sufficient power. The aircraft landed safely, and no one was injured.

An American Airlines flight bound for New York returned to Charlotte Douglas International Airport on the evening of Friday, October 9, 2026, after an engine problem developed soon after departure.
Flight AA1060 left Runway 36 bound for LaGuardia Airport. Shortly after lifting off, the crew reported a significant loss of performance from the left engine, which did not generate enough power to hold a standard climb to cruise altitude. The Boeing 737-800, registered N950NN, could not climb above 4,700 feet.
The pilots declared an emergency and asked to return to Charlotte immediately. Following standard procedures for engine performance problems, they also requested that Airport Rescue and Firefighting crews meet the plane on arrival.
The aircraft landed on Runway 1R, touching down 19 minutes after takeoff. Emergency personnel stood by as it cleared the runway. No passengers or crew members were hurt.
The plane was then taken out of service for maintenance inspections to establish why the engine lost power. It returned to service the following day, operating flight AA2415 to Newark.
