American Airlines opened applications this week for the flight attendant trainee group it plans to bring in during 2027.

The carrier said candidates will get a more candid description of the work than in previous hiring rounds. That includes night, weekend and holiday shifts, and the first two years spent on reserve, where crew members must be ready to take assignments at short notice. The process will also highlight the benefits flight attendants receive, among them travel privileges.

Cole Brown, American's chief people officer, said in a news release that improving how candidates experience hiring is one of the ways the company is making sure its staff are prepared to look after customers. He said the carrier wants the process to reflect the hospitality and service passengers should expect.

Those who apply online and are chosen to move forward will be asked to send in a brief introduction video. Remote and in-person interviews and assessments come next. The final stage is seven weeks of training planned for 2027 at the airline's Robert L. Crandall Campus in the Dallas/Fort Worth area. New hires then serve a six-month probationary period after graduating.

American said speaking more than one language is not required, but that it is seeking candidates who know Mandarin, Dutch, German, Haitian Creole and other languages. The source did not list the full set.
