American Airlines will open the largest Admirals Club in its network at Charlotte Douglas International Airport in North Carolina. The airline said the project is part of a premium service expansion at its second-busiest connecting hub.

The lounge will cover more than 40,000 square feet, about 3,716 square metres, on the mezzanine level of the terminal's central atrium. American says that position will give panoramic views over the boarding gates below.

The announcement follows plans the carrier presented last year to expand passenger facilities in Charlotte, including a first Flagship Lounge at the airport.

Heather Garboden, American's Director of Customer Experience, said designing a lounge that gives customers more room to relax, work and recharge is the airline's top priority. She said the company is pleased to bring its largest Admirals Club to a hub used by millions of customers each year.

Construction is due to begin this year. American said its existing lounges will keep operating throughout the work: Provisions by Admirals Club near gate A1, and the Admirals Club locations in Concourse B and Concourse C/D.
