American Airlines to launch seven new transatlantic routes for 2027

American Airlines has announced seven new routes between the United States and Europe, plus one to Asia, starting in 2027. Some services will begin as early as March that year, the airline said.

The new routes are Charlotte to Barcelona, Chicago to Tokyo, New York JFK to Amsterdam, JFK to Nice, Philadelphia to Porto, Philadelphia to Vienna, and Philadelphia to Reykjavik. Several will fly on the carrier's incoming Airbus A321XLR jets, of which it has 40 on order. Others will use Boeing 787-9 or 777-200ER aircraft, while the Reykjavik route is planned for the A321neo.

American also said it will extend seasonal service between Charlotte and Paris and between Miami and Milan. Both routes resume in early March 2027.

Separately, the airline plans to increase daily flights between JFK and London Heathrow from three to four, operated with 787-9 aircraft. According to the airline, the expansion will include more first-class suites, reflecting continued demand for premium seating even as fuel costs weigh on margins. American has been working to close a profitability gap with rivals Delta Air Lines and United Airlines.

The announcement followed United's own 2027 international expansion plans, which include ten new routes such as Newark to Luxembourg and Ibiza, Washington Dulles to Toulouse, and San Francisco to Okinawa. United has 50 A321XLRs on order, according to the report.
