American Airlines to launch seven new transatlantic routes for summer 2027

American Airlines has announced seven new international routes starting in the 2027 summer season. The carrier made the announcement on August 27, 2026, after a social media teaser campaign.

Two of the new destinations are in Europe: Porto, Portugal, and Vienna, Austria, both flown nonstop from American's Philadelphia hub. American said it will be the only US carrier flying to the Austrian capital. Vienna Airport's leadership had reportedly named that market a priority for route development.

The airline will also resume service to Keflavik, Iceland, a route it dropped in 2019 after previously operating it.

According to the airline, the Porto and Vienna flights will use the new Airbus A321XLR. The Keflavik route will be served by a standard A321neo, which the carrier said has enough range for that sector from the US East Coast. Porto flights begin March 28, 2027, with Vienna and Keflavik following on May 6 and May 28, 2027.

American is also putting its incoming A321XLR aircraft on new routes linking New York's JFK airport with Amsterdam and Nice, France.

The expansion follows a similar announcement from United Airlines a day earlier. United unveiled its own new European destinations, including Ibiza and Valencia, also to be served with the A321XLR. Both moves point to a wider trend among US carriers: using the long-range narrowbody jet to open smaller European markets that were previously reachable only via connections or larger aircraft.
