American Airlines to launch A321XLR routes from Philadelphia to Europe in 2027

American Airlines plans to expand its transatlantic network from Philadelphia in summer 2027, adding new routes to Reykjavik, Vienna and Porto. The Reykjavik service marks a return for the carrier, which last flew the route in 2019.

All three routes will be operated using Airbus A321 aircraft. The Philadelphia-Reykjavik route will use the standard A321neo, while the longer routes to Vienna and Porto will be flown with the extended-range A321XLR variant.

According to schedule data cited in reporting on the announcement, the Philadelphia-Vienna route would become the longest A321XLR city pair currently scheduled, exceeding 4,300 miles and surpassing the existing Madrid-Santo Domingo route by close to 200 miles. The move comes amid broader industry discussion about whether the A321XLR's real-world range matches its originally advertised specifications, with United Airlines reported to have taken a more conservative approach in planning its own new XLR routes announced around the same time.

For the Reykjavik route, American is expected to configure the aircraft without a premium long-haul cabin, instead selling its domestic first-class seats as international premium economy, an approach similar to strategies used by United and Delta on comparable routes.

The Vienna route is planned as seasonal, launching in May 2027 and continuing into early January 2028, an unusually long operating window for a seasonal transatlantic service.
