American Airlines to launch Philadelphia-Vienna route with A321XLR in 2027

American Airlines plans to begin daily flights between Philadelphia and Vienna starting on 6 May 2027, according to the airline. The route will make American the only US-based carrier serving Vienna once operations begin, and Philadelphia will be a new destination for Vienna's airport.

The airline said it will operate the route using the Airbus A321XLR. Its current A321XLR configuration includes 20 business-class suites arranged one-by-one, 12 premium economy seats, and 123 economy seats. American currently operates seven of the type, with 40 total on order after trimming an original commitment of 50 aircraft.

Vienna's home carrier, Austrian Airlines, already offers US connections from its hub to Boston, Chicago, Los Angeles, New York-JFK, New York-Newark and Washington. The new Philadelphia link would add a competing option for transatlantic travelers.

The Vienna route is one of seven new international routes American announced for 2027, six of which serve European destinations. Other planned routes include Charlotte to Barcelona using a Boeing 777-200ER starting 27 May, Chicago to Tokyo-Narita with a Boeing 787-9 from 19 March, and two additional A321XLR routes connecting New York-JFK with Amsterdam and London-Heathrow, both starting 28 March, according to the airline's announcement.
