American Airlines scales back 2027 long-haul route plans amid delivery delays

American Airlines has scaled back its summer 2027 long-haul network expansion after aircraft delivery delays left it with fewer widebody jets than planned, a senior executive said.

Brian Znotins, the airline's senior vice president of network planning, said American had once expected to announce as many as ten to thirteen new long-haul routes for the period. Seven have been finalized instead: Philadelphia to Vienna, Porto and Reykjavik; New York-JFK to Amsterdam and Nice; Charlotte to Barcelona; and Chicago O'Hare to Tokyo Narita. The airline will also add a fourth daily frequency between New York-JFK and London Heathrow.

Znotins said American had earlier anticipated roughly thirteen additional long-haul aircraft year over year. Delivery delays cut that number by five. He said he was disappointed with both Boeing and Airbus, and that the 2027 expansion would have been considerably larger had the manufacturers met their delivery commitments.

According to Znotins, these seven routes are likely to be the airline's full long-haul expansion for summer 2027, unless aircraft availability improves unexpectedly before then.

The comments point to how manufacturing delays at both major planemakers continue to shape airline network planning well beyond near-term schedules, constraining growth plans that carriers had built around expected delivery timelines.
