Australia declares initial operational capability for Triton and Peregrine aircraft

The Royal Australian Air Force has declared Initial Operational Capability for the MQ-4C Triton unmanned aircraft and the MC-55A Peregrine, an aircraft configured for intelligence, surveillance, reconnaissance and electronic warfare.

The announcement, made Sept. 22, 2026, also noted that upgrades to the first two P-8A Poseidon maritime patrol aircraft have been completed in the United States.

According to the service, the declaration followed extensive Operational Testing and Evaluation. The two platforms are intended to give the Australian Defence Force complementary crewed and uncrewed capabilities, including persistent surveillance, intelligence collection and electronic warfare effects. The service calls the milestone a step in strengthening airborne intelligence-gathering and maritime surveillance across the Indo-Pacific.

Australia is acquiring four MQ-4C Triton aircraft, three of which have been delivered, according to the source.

Chief of Air Force Air Marshal Stephen Chappell said personnel from industry, the public service and the Air Force were central to bringing the systems into service, describing their work as demonstrating skill and professionalism in delivering the capabilities for Australia.
