Avianca Medellín–New York flight diverts to Miami after severe turbulence

An Avianca flight from Medellín to New York diverted to Miami early Friday after encountering severe turbulence. Nine people were affected and at least eight were taken to hospital, according to the airline and operational reports.

An Avianca flight from Medellín to New York diverted to Miami International Airport after severe turbulence. At least eight people were taken to medical centres.

Flight AV042 left José María Córdova International Airport at 10:40 p.m. on Thursday, according to flight-tracking records, and was due in New York at 8:25 a.m. Weather and severe, unexpected turbulence led the crew to change course. A precautionary contingency was declared, and the aircraft landed safely in Miami at 3:30 a.m. local time on Friday.

Nine people were affected, the operational and medical report said: three cabin crew members and six passengers. At least eight were transferred to hospitals after medical assessment at the airport. Ground staff and emergency services activated response protocols when the aircraft arrived.

Avianca said it had activated its assistance protocol for those affected and for the other occupants as a preventive measure under its safety procedures.
