Aviation and tech groups form coalition on EU biometric travel rules
A group of aviation and technology organisations has formed a coalition to push for clearer EU rules on the voluntary use of biometric data in air travel, warning that draft legislation could unintentionally restrict it.

ACI Europe, Amadeus, Iata, Idemia Public Security and Sita have formed the Responsible Biometrics Travel Industry Coalition to push for clearer EU rules on biometric data in air travel.
The group says the planned EU Digital Omnibus could unintentionally limit voluntary use of biometric procedures. It wants technology-neutral rules that permit biometric identity checks while protecting data privacy and keeping travellers' freedom of choice.
Passengers would still be able to use non-biometric alternatives under the coalition's proposal, and to ask for their data to be deleted. The group cites an Iata survey in which 74 percent of respondents said they would be willing to use biometric data instead of a passport or boarding pass.
