US transport secretary calls for faster FAA aircraft certification

Sean Duffy said the United States needs to speed up aircraft approvals to stay competitive with China, while keeping safety intact. The FAA has already proposed a certification overhaul.

US Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy called for faster certification of new aircraft, saying the country must pick up the pace to avoid falling behind China in competition. He made the remarks on 30 September at an event in Washington, according to a report on the comments. Safety must not suffer as a result, he said.

The Federal Aviation Administration had already proposed a reform in June intended to make approvals quicker, simpler and cheaper. According to the agency, certifying a new aircraft type currently takes five to nine years, while changes to existing models require three to five years. The FAA also wants to bring its procedures closer into line with the standards of Europe's EASA. Duffy said he expects the changes to bring more innovation and competition to the aviation industry.
