Changi Airport Group launches research centre for runway pavements
Singapore's Changi Airport Group has set up a research centre to improve how runways, taxiways and aircraft stands are built and maintained, citing heavier aircraft, rising traffic and extreme weather.

Changi Airport Group has established a research centre in Singapore called the Airport Pavement Centre of Excellence, or Apex. The centre will work on the development and upkeep of runways, taxiways and aircraft parking areas.
The company points to growing pressure on airport surfaces: more air traffic, heavier aircraft and extreme weather events. Damage to runways and taxiways can force unplanned closures and reduce an airport's capacity.
Apex is intended to bring airport operators, researchers and pavement specialists together. Among those taking part are staff from the National University of Singapore, Nanyang Technological University and Changi Airport Group itself.
Planned projects include more durable asphalt mixes using polymer-modified bitumen, to be adapted to different climatic conditions. The centre also aims to work with the US Federal Aviation Administration on developing regional standards.
