China deploys J-16 fighters to Africa for joint exercise with Egypt

China has deployed a larger contingent than last year to Egypt for the joint air exercise known as Eagles of Civilization 2026. At least six Shenyang J-16 fighter jets are taking part, according to the report, marking the first known use of this aircraft type in Africa.

Since August 23, the Chinese J-16s have been training in simulated air combat against Egyptian air force Rafale and MiG-29 jets. The Chinese contingent also included YY-20 tanker aircraft, Y-20 transport planes, and KJ-200 and KJ-500 airborne early warning aircraft. A Z-20 helicopter was also sent to Egypt.

The Chinese formation covered more than 6,000 kilometers en route to Egypt, with the J-16 fighters refueled in the air during the journey. In 2025, for the first edition of the exercise, China had instead sent J-10C and J-10S fighters to Egypt.
