China displays H-6N bomber carrying suspected nuclear-capable missile

China has released images of its Xi'an H-6N strategic bomber carrying a missile identified as a JL-1, which is described as possibly nuclear-capable. The aircraft was shown accompanied by two Chengdu J-20 fighters. The photographs were published in early August.

The bomber itself is not new. China presented the H-6N publicly in 2019, and according to the Pentagon it entered service with the Chinese air force in 2020. What is new is the combination shown: bomber, long-range missile and escort fighters.

The H-6N is meant to form the air-launched component of China's nuclear deterrent, alongside land-based intercontinental ballistic missiles and submarine-launched ballistic missiles. The aircraft was extensively modified for that role. It can carry large weapons externally under the fuselage and has a probe at the nose for air-to-air refuelling.

Range is where the type differs most from the long-range strategic bombers of the United States and Russia. The US Air Force's Boeing B-52H reaches roughly 14,200 kilometres and can carry up to about 31.5 tonnes of weapons. Russia's Tupolev Tu-95MS is also built for long range. All three aircraft serve as flying platforms for long-range weapons, but they differ noticeably in size, range and payload.

US estimates put the H-6N's operational range at probably around 3,000 kilometres, a figure that air-to-air refuelling is expected to raise to as much as 6,500 kilometres.
