Composite construction of A350 and 787 poses future recycling challenges
The widespread use of carbon fiber composites in the Airbus A350 and Boeing 787 is expected to complicate aircraft recycling once those jets begin retiring in large numbers.

The Airbus A350 and Boeing 787 Dreamliner, both built mostly from carbon fiber reinforced polymer, present a growing problem for the aircraft recycling industry, according to an industry analysis. Unlike older aluminum-heavy jets, these composite airframes are harder to break down and reprocess at the end of their service lives.
CFRP has become common in modern aircraft because it is lighter and stronger than aluminum alloys. The proportion of composite material varies by type. The Boeing 777 is about 8% composite by weight, the Airbus A320 around 10%, and the A380 roughly 25%. The 787 and A350 are different: majority composite by weight, and more than 80% composite by construction, the analysis noted.
Recyclers have long-established methods for melting down and reusing aluminum from retired airframes. Composite materials do not lend themselves to the same processes. Separating and reclaiming carbon fiber is more technically demanding, and less economically established.
As more A350s and 787s eventually reach retirement age, the industry will need to develop new approaches to handle the material at scale. The report did not specify a timeline for when significant numbers of these aircraft will be retired, nor did it detail specific recycling technologies currently in development.
The issue reflects a broader shift in aircraft manufacturing toward composite materials for fuel efficiency and durability. That shift, according to the analysis, has outpaced the development of end-of-life recycling infrastructure to match it.
