Boeing expects to certify the 777-9 in early 2027, with Lufthansa entering service shortly afterwards. That is roughly seven years later than the original schedule.

Rather than halt the 777 production line while certification slipped, Boeing built a number of 777-9s intended for passenger service. Dozens of these early-build aircraft will need rework before handover.

According to the report, one of the early airframes has also been scrapped.

For customers, delivery of their 777Xs is unlikely to follow immediately on certification.
