Eurocontrol's Maastricht centre reports sharp drop in summer delay figures

The Maastricht Upper Area Control Centre says it cut delays attributed to the facility by more than half over the May to September period, even though flight numbers held steady year on year.

Eurocontrol's Maastricht Upper Area Control Centre, known as MUAC, worked 842,259 flights between May and September 2026, a figure broadly level with the same period a year earlier. Delays attributed to the centre fell by more than half.

About 98.4 percent of flights passed through its airspace with no delay linked to the centre, and most flights that did see a hold-up were late by under a quarter of an hour. MUAC put the improvement down to coordinated traffic management, a better spread of traffic, workforce planning and mostly favourable weather. It said it expects to close the year comfortably inside its EU delay target.

Its busiest month was July, at 174,056 flights, while 10 September was its busiest single day, with controllers handling 5,619 flights.

The centre reported no severity A or B safety events so far this year. It also pointed to dependable technical systems and the use of controller-pilot datalink, with log-on rates reaching as high as 80 percent. More direct routings available through its ATM Portal delivered an estimated saving of roughly 512 tonnes of CO2 during the peak season.

A controller-training programme run with GATE Aviation Training in Copenhagen is under way and is meant to support the centre's longer-term staffing needs, MUAC said.
