German airline group criticises Emirates traffic rights decision

The German airline association BDF says granting Emirates additional traffic rights for Germany disadvantages local carriers and calls for tax relief.

The Federal Association of German Airlines (BDF) has sharply criticised the German government's decision to grant Emirates additional traffic rights for Germany. The association said the move disadvantages German airlines and threatens jobs.

BDF sees no benefit for Berlin as an aviation location either. It said Emirates would merely connect Berlin with its Dubai hub and not create direct long-haul connections to other destinations. The association also voiced concern that other airlines might be deterred from launching new long-haul services from Berlin.

BDF called for the abolition of the aviation tax and further state relief for German carriers.
