German airline lobby seeks cost relief ahead of 2027 budget talks
The German airline association BDF is pressing for lower air traffic costs as federal budget consultations for 2027 begin, calling for state co-funding of air traffic control and security checks and the scrapping of the air transport tax.
The Bundesverband der Deutschen Fluggesellschaften, the German airline association, has asked for further cost relief for aviation as consultations on the 2027 federal budget get under way.
The association wants the state to help pay for air traffic control and aviation security checks, and it wants the air transport tax abolished.
As an immediate measure for 2027, the BDF is seeking a cut of 100 to 150 million euros in the take-off and landing fees charged by Deutsche Flugsicherung, the national air traffic control provider. BDF managing director Michael Engel said those fees have tripled since 2019. The association also said the federal states could take on part of the aviation security costs at their airports.
The stated aim is to make the location cheaper so that German air traffic can grow again.
