German defence minister announces plan for 16 more Airbus A400M aircraft
Boris Pistorius said the Bundeswehr intends to procure 16 additional Airbus A400M transports to replace older airframes lacking expanded tactical capabilities. Parliament must still approve any order.
German defence minister Boris Pistorius plans to buy 16 more Airbus A400M transports for the Bundeswehr, he said on a visit to the manufacturer's plant in Bremen.
The aircraft would replace older A400Ms that lack the expanded tactical capabilities of the newer version. The Bundeswehr has 53 A400M in service, of which 16 are pure transports without those capabilities.
"We are currently thinking very concretely about gradually replacing logistic aircraft with new tactical ones," Pistorius said.
Any order still needs approval from the Bundestag.
