GPS reception instability disrupts Embraer E2 operations worldwide

Embraer E2 operators are contending with GPS reception instability that has affected flights in several regions, Europe among them. Brazilian carrier Azul said the instability was worldwide and was affecting operation of its E2 fleet. The airline said it was taking precautionary operational measures that could lead to changes in its network and in the times of some flights, and briefly grounded its E195-E2 aircraft.

Embraer said it had been informed of an instability in the GPS system affecting some aircraft types, including the E2. It said it was providing technical support to customers and carrying out the measures needed to resolve the problem. The incident can disrupt airline operations but has no effect on flight safety, according to the manufacturer, which said the global E2 fleet has navigation systems and procedures that allow operation under conditions of GPS instability and ensure safe flight in line with applicable aviation authority requirements.

Honeywell, which supplies the GPS equipment, told Reuters it was aware of a GPS reception problem affecting aircraft worldwide and that its teams were actively investigating to establish the underlying cause. Embraer and Honeywell have set up a crisis team, according to Simple Flying.

The effects have not been limited to Brazil. Flight-tracking data showed Azul's Embraer E195-E2 remained on the ground from late Tuesday afternoon, and cancellations of E2 flights were also reported in Europe.
