Hamburg Airport invests in electric lift vehicles for accessible boarding
Hamburg Airport is spending more than €2 million on electric highloader vehicles to improve accessible boarding, part of a wider terminal modernisation programme.
Hamburg Airport is putting more than two million euros into electrically powered special vehicles to expand its accessibility services, the airport said.
Two of the so-called electric highloaders are already running. Two more are due in 2027. The vehicles carry up to eleven passengers and give step-free access to aircraft parked at remote stands, rather than at jet bridges.
According to the airport, the number of travellers registering a need for mobility assistance rose 14 percent in the first half of 2026 compared with the previous year.
The new vehicles can lift to a height of 5.7 metres. They come with a 360-degree camera, additional sensors, and a no-touch docking function, the airport said.
The purchase is part of a modernisation programme called HAM Upgrade, worth more than 20 million euros in total.
