Icelandair mechanics end strike after one day

Icelandair's mechanics ended their strike shortly after it began, the carrier said. The walkout had forced it to cancel several flights.

The Icelandic Aircraft Mechanics Association had said earlier in the month that members would strike indefinitely if no agreement was reached on a new collective bargaining agreement. The action started at 00:01 local time on 23 September and was called off later that day.

Icelandair said in a stock-exchange notice issued on 23 September that the strike had disrupted operations and led to cancellations. With the action withdrawn, the airline said it expected its flight schedule to return to normal from later that day.

The union said a wage dispute between the carrier and its flight engineers had been running since November last year, with little progress despite the involvement of a mediator.

Icelandair reported an operating loss of $29.6 million in the second quarter, against a profit of $800,000 in the same quarter of 2025.
