Israel expands nationality restrictions to crews overflying its airspace

Israel has widened its rules on the nationality of foreign airline crew, extending them from flights bound for Israel to aircraft that only transit Israeli airspace, covering 31 countries without diplomatic ties.

Israel has broadened restrictions on the nationality of pilots and cabin crew working for international airlines, according to the aviation outlet PYOK. The rules previously applied to crews operating flights to Israel. They now also cover crews of aircraft that only overfly Israeli airspace.

The measures affect crew members who hold the nationality of one of 31 countries that do not maintain diplomatic relations with Israel. Among them are Iran, Iraq, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Pakistan, Indonesia and Malaysia. Dual nationals are covered as well, even when they also hold a passport from a country that has diplomatic ties with Israel.

The restrictions follow what the source describes as a foiled attack attempt on a flydubai flight to Tel Aviv on 30 September.
