Japan Airlines signs first Corsia-compliant CO2 removal certificate deal
Japan Airlines and Swiss firm Climeworks say they have concluded the world's first purchase agreement for CO2 removal certificates intended to meet Corsia requirements. Neither company disclosed the volume or value of the deal.
Japan Airlines has signed a purchase agreement with the Swiss company Climeworks for CO2 removal certificates, which the two firms say are the first intended to meet the requirements of Corsia, the international aviation offsetting scheme. The companies did not give the size or value of the agreement.
The portfolio assembled by Climeworks is to cover several methods of permanently binding CO2, including storage in the ground and biochar. Japan Airlines is also buying certificates from direct air capture, the process of extracting CO2 from the atmosphere. The carrier said it wants to support the further development of that technology.
