Keflavík Airport's new duty free shops prioritise sustainability

Gebr. Heinemann put sustainability at the centre of its renovated ÍSLAND Duty Free shops at Keflavík Airport. The operator said the concept included it from the start.

Regional fixtures were produced by 3D robotics from Nagami, using recycled plastic partly sourced from the ocean. Wall coverings come from Omexco MINERALS, made of recycled paper and mica. The stores also have energy-efficient LED lighting, digital shelf labels, no single-use plastic bags, and a Dopper water station offering free tap water refills in cooperation with airport operator Isavia.

Heinemann operates three retail spaces at the airport: a 1,600sqm departure shop, a 2,000sqm arrivals shop, and a gate shop. The departure store has an open shopfront and multi-directional access. A regional area designed with Basalt Architects showcases Icelandic products, with a floor referencing the Blue Lagoon and a ceiling installation evoking geothermal steam. The arrivals shop is designed for speed and convenience, with strong allowance communication and routes towards baggage claim.
