KLM Cityhopper Marks 60 Years of Regional Operations
The Dutch regional carrier, founded as Nederlandse Luchtvaart Maatschappij in 1966, has grown to operate 58 Embraer aircraft serving over 80 destinations.
KLM Cityhopper has turned 60. The KLM regional subsidiary started flying in 1966 as Nederlandse Luchtvaart Maatschappij, with two leased Fokker aircraft and a few domestic routes in the Netherlands. Now it operates 58 aircraft to more than 80 destinations and completes over 350 flights a day. Roughly eleven million passengers fly with the airline each year.
KLM Cityhopper flew Fokker aircraft for decades before moving to Embraer in 2008. Its fleet today is made up entirely of Embraer regional jets.
The airline carries feeder traffic for KLM's Amsterdam hub, and it is also used to test new technology, from virtual reality pilot training to OptiClimb software meant to cut fuel burn during climb.
