Libya is preparing a case at the International Court of Justice in The Hague against Israel over the 1973 downing of a Libyan Arab Airlines Boeing 727-200 over the Sinai Peninsula, the Libya Herald reports.
The aircraft, registered 5A-DAH, was flying from Tripoli to Cairo via Benghazi when Israeli fighter aircraft intercepted and shot it down on 21 February 1973. Of those on board, 108 died; five survived.
Libya's ambassador to the Netherlands, Ziad Daghim, told the court in writing that the filing is planned. Libya cites Israeli government documents released in 2023, which it argues show a violation of the 1971 Montreal Convention.
No formal application has been submitted yet. Libya says it will set out the legal grounds, the alleged violations and its claims in that application. Israel had not commented.
