Loganair to close Dundee base, ending city's air service

Loganair will withdraw from Dundee Airport in October, halting its London Heathrow route and connecting flights to Shetland and Orkney, leaving the city without scheduled commercial flights.

Loganair has announced it will close its operating base at Dundee Airport, ending scheduled commercial air service to the city. The Scottish regional carrier said it will terminate its route between Dundee and London Heathrow on October 23, after which connecting services to the Shetland Islands and Orkney, which relied on the base, will also stop.

According to the airline, the Dundee-Heathrow route had become financially unsustainable despite receiving public subsidy support from local, Scottish, and UK government bodies under a public service obligation arrangement, similar in concept to the Essential Air Service program used in the United States.

Loganair said it would support affected staff at the Dundee base in seeking alternative employment, though it did not specify how many jobs might be lost as a result of the closure. The airline has operated from Dundee since 2008.

With the base closure, Dundee will lose its only scheduled commercial air link, a rare instance of a UK city airport going without any regular passenger flights. Loganair continues to operate an extensive network across the UK, linking Scottish cities and island communities to England, and also serves destinations in France, Ireland, Denmark, and Norway.
