Lone Star Flight Museum Hosts 12th Annual Girls in Aviation Day

The Lone Star Flight Museum in Houston held its 12th annual Girls in Aviation Day on Saturday, September 19. More than 500 girls attended, along with their parents and siblings, from across Texas.

Jackie Drake, the museum's director of communications, said participants toured aircraft, climbed aboard, and spoke with pilots. They also tried the museum's flight simulators, which officials described as an immersive experience beyond traditional video games. Drone soccer was among the more popular hands-on activities, highlighting technology, precision flying, and teamwork.

ExxonMobil supported the event for a third year, providing free access to the museum for a day of aviation-inspired curriculum and activities. Participants also built working flashlights. Drake said the activity taught how power sources, switches, and circuits work together to create light, concepts she described as fundamental to technologies used in aircraft, spacecraft, and aerospace systems. The event was designed to spark interest in STEM vocations.

Activities also included technology demonstrations and other hands-on sessions. Drake noted that aviation offers careers beyond piloting, such as engineering.
