Louisville airport spending over $1bn on international passenger gateway

Louisville Muhammad Ali International Airport is investing more than $1 billion to build its first scheduled international passenger facility, building on infrastructure developed around UPS Worldport.

Louisville Muhammad Ali International Airport is spending more than $1 billion on something it has never had for scheduled passenger flights: an international gateway, according to an account of the project.

The Kentucky airport, also known as Standiford Field, does not need to rebuild its airfield for the new facility. Decades of investment tied to UPS Worldport, the cargo operation based there, have already left it with substantial aviation infrastructure.

Passenger growth is driving the push for more capable terminal space. The airport ranks as the world's third-busiest cargo hub.
