Lufthansa Group to add 20 Boeing 737 MAX 10s under 2023 order options
Lufthansa's supervisory board has approved exercising options for 20 Boeing 737 MAX 10 aircraft, part of a fleet modernisation effort that will eventually replace older Airbus A320s.
Deutsche Lufthansa AG's supervisory board has approved the exercise of options for 20 Boeing 737 MAX 10 aircraft, the group said. The rights come from a 2023 order for 40 Boeing 737 MAX 8s, which included 60 purchase options for other aircraft in the 737 MAX range. Deliveries of the MAX 10s are due to start in the early 2030s.
The board backed the purchase to support long-term capacity planning. The aircraft are to replace older Airbus A320s over time.
The MAX 10 is the largest member of the 737 MAX family and seats more passengers than the MAX 8 already on order. Lufthansa says the type should burn roughly 30 percent less fuel than the aircraft it replaces, and the higher seating capacity is expected to cut unit costs by about 20 percent. The group frames both as ways to lower carbon emissions and improve efficiency on European routes.
The order has a list value of around USD 3.4 billion. It is part of an ongoing fleet modernisation programme under which the group expects to take delivery of more than 250 new aircraft by 2035.
