Lufthansa launches free Starlink internet on first regular flight

Lufthansa has activated Starlink satellite internet on a scheduled flight for the first time, offering free gate-to-gate connectivity to passengers and new operational tools for crews.

Lufthansa has begun rolling out Starlink satellite internet service. A regular flight this week became the first to fly with the system active. According to the airline, passengers can access free internet from gate to gate using a single login for the whole travel party.

Airline chief executive Jens Ritter switched on the system himself from the cockpit before the flight departed, then made an announcement to passengers explaining the new offering. Ritter, who says he still holds a valid Airbus pilot licence after years of flying, called the moment a significant milestone for the carrier's modernisation efforts and for passenger comfort.

According to Ritter, the high-speed connection is meant to do more than support entertainment and browsing in the cabin. He said the technology could also support flight operations directly, citing the transmission of weather data as one example. Crews, he added, may in future be able to send images or short video clips using the improved bandwidth, supporting operational communication in ways not previously practical with slower onboard connections.

Lufthansa frames the Starlink rollout as part of a wider modernisation push across the group, meant to show that previously announced upgrades are now reaching passengers in tangible form. The airline has not detailed a timeline for extending Starlink across its wider fleet beyond the initial flight.
