Lufthansa's A340-600 set for final passenger flight on 18 October
Lufthansa is retiring its Airbus A340-600 fleet, with the last passenger service scheduled to leave Washington-Dulles for Frankfurt. The airline's fans have been sharing photographs of the four-engine jet.

Lufthansa's Airbus A340-600 is scheduled to make its last passenger flight on Sunday 18 October, according to the airline's published schedule. The aircraft, registered D-AIHW, is expected to leave Washington-Dulles at 17:55 local time and arrive in Frankfurt at 07:55 the next morning, ending its career in scheduled service.
The long-haul jet has flown with the German carrier for more than two decades. Its length, four engines and slender profile made it one of the most recognisable aircraft in Lufthansa colours, and it drew a following among aviation enthusiasts and frequent travellers.
Ahead of the withdrawal, the publication asked readers to send in their own photographs of the type. The response covered take-offs from Munich and Frankfurt, transatlantic crossings, views through cabin windows and shots taken from airport fences.
For some contributors the A340-600 was the aircraft of a first long-haul trip. Others treated it simply as a subject worth photographing. The farewell comes as Lufthansa winds down operations with the quad-jet, which leaves the passenger network after the Frankfurt-bound arrival.
