Malaysia Airlines completes drug screening for all pilots ahead of deadline
Malaysia Aviation Group says every operationally active Malaysia Airlines pilot has been tested for drugs, with all results negative, as it extends screening to cabin crew and sister carrier Firefly.
Malaysia Aviation Group (MAG) has finished a mandatory drug-screening programme covering all operationally active pilots at Malaysia Airlines, meeting an internal deadline of August 15, 2026. The group said every pilot was tested and all results came back negative.
Group chief executive Nasaruddin A. Bakar described the completion of this phase as an important milestone, while stressing further work remains. He said screening would extend to other operational groups so the same standards apply consistently across the group's airlines.
MAG is now screening roughly 2,840 Malaysia Airlines cabin crew, a process that began on August 18, 2026, and is expected to finish by September 3, 2026.
A parallel effort is under way at Firefly, MAG's sister carrier. As of August 15, more than half of its 158 pilots and 163 cabin crew had been tested, with negative results so far. According to the group, Firefly aims to finish screening its remaining staff by August 25, 2026, ahead of a September 5 deadline set by Malaysia's Civil Aviation Authority.
MAG said it intends to keep running random testing through its Safety and Health team, working alongside aviation regulators. The company added that the screening builds on an existing fitness-for-duty framework that already includes pre-employment checks, medical certification, recurrent training and periodic alcohol and drug tests, along with pre-flight compliance procedures.
