Malaysia Airlines said to near order for 10 Boeing 787-10s

Malaysia Airlines is close to placing its first order for Boeing 787 Dreamliners, according to Bloomberg. The deal would replace seven Airbus A350-900s the carrier leases.

Parent company Malaysia Aviation Group is weighing an order for 10 787-10s, the largest variant of the Dreamliner, the report says. Boeing is said to have moved ahead of Airbus by offering earlier delivery positions beginning in 2031.

Malaysia Aviation Group has been looking to replace the seven leased A350-900s and to add more widebody capacity beyond that. In August, group president and chief executive Captain Nasaruddin Bakar told The Edge that seven aircraft would be the minimum to replace. Growth meant the requirement would be larger, he added.

Types examined for the replacement include the A350-1000, the 787-9 and 787-10, and the 777X, which has yet to enter service.

The carrier's current widebody fleet is made up of A350-900s, A330neos and A330-200s and A330-300s. It previously flew A380s, 777s and 747s. Malaysia Airlines operates 10 A330neos, with 30 more on order. In July 2025 it exercised options for 20 additional A330-900neos, with deliveries from that batch due to start in 2029 and run through 2031.

The order has not been finalised. The account rests on people familiar with the discussions, and no confirmation has come from the airline or the manufacturer.
