Massachusetts Air National Guard receives first F-35A at Barnes base
The 104th Fighter Wing welcomed the Lockheed Martin F-35A Lightning II on 13 September, replacing the F-15 Eagle at Barnes. New infrastructure was built and personnel trained for the transition.
The 104th Fighter Wing, Massachusetts Air National Guard, took delivery of its first Lockheed Martin F-35A Lightning II at Barnes on 13 September. The F-35A replaces the F-15 Eagle. The conversion was decided in December 2024, and the wing's last three F-15s left Barnes in October 2025.
The base gained new infrastructure for the transition, and unit members trained to operate the F-35A. Stealth technology, modern sensor fusion and precision weapons are meant to expand what the unit can do. Among its other duties, the wing keeps a round-the-clock alert posture for the defence of US airspace.
