Nashville International Airport could be renamed for Dolly Parton, under plans presented jointly by the airport operator and Tennessee Governor Bill Lee. The proposal is meant as a lasting tribute to the country singer, who died recently.
No final decision has been made. The governor said discussions have already taken place with Parton's family, who reportedly indicated openness to further talks on the matter.
Officials are also considering a change to the airport's IATA code, currently BNA, which could become DPI under the new name. They have not said when a final decision might be reached.
A petition calling for the renaming has gathered more than 162,000 signatures so far. The airport, one of the busiest in the southeastern United States, has not previously gone through a name change of this kind.
No timeline was given for when the airport's board or relevant aviation authorities might formally vote on the proposal. Further details, including any cost tied to rebranding signage, systems, and codes, have not yet been disclosed.
