Storms force SWISS to cancel 85 flights at Zurich Airport

Repeated lightning strikes during severe thunderstorms disrupted operations at Zurich Airport on 28 August, and SWISS cancelled dozens of flights over the course of the day.

According to the airline, cancellations climbed steadily as the weather worsened. By lunchtime SWISS had reported 27 cancelled flights, affecting about 3,100 passengers. The toll rose sharply during the afternoon. By the end of the day, the airline had cancelled 85 flights, affecting around 11,200 travelers.

SWISS also said numerous other flights faced delays and knock-on disruption, as the storms slowed both ground operations and air traffic.

No injuries or safety incidents were reported in connection with the disruption. The airline did not immediately say how long recovery operations would take, or when normal schedules would resume at the airport.
