Nauru renames itself Naoero, airport and airline follow suit

The Pacific island state of Nauru has officially taken on its traditional name, becoming the Republic of Naoero. Parliament approved the constitutional change in May, and President David Adeang has now confirmed that a planned referendum on the renaming will not go ahead.

According to Adeang, the move is not about adopting a new identity, but about formally recognising a name the population already uses to describe itself.

The change extends to national infrastructure. The country's airport has been renamed Naoero International Airport, though its IATA code, INU, remains unchanged. Nauru Airlines is now also referred to officially by the government as Naoero Airlines.

No other operational details, such as fleet, route network or rebranding timeline for the carrier, were provided.
